The Influence of Personal Characteristics, Family Environment and Mental Health on Adolescents’ Smoking

|
Background: The purpose of this research was to figure out and analyze how adolescents’ smoking could be affected by their personal characteristics, family environment, and mental health. Methods: This data source was the adolescents’ health behavior online survey 2010 (Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011) on the behaviors of 7,848 students at 84 schools in Seoul. Adolescents’ personal characteristics, family environment, mental health, and smoking characteristics were investigated and analyzed. SPSS Win ver. 18.0 statistics program was used for data analysis such as frequency, cross-tabulation, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The boys tended to smoke more than the girls, and upper class students smoked more than lower class ones. The lower grade students tended to smoke more than the upper grade ones. The students who thought that he or she would be slim tended to smoke more than those who thought that he or she would be fat. The students whose house income was lower and had have part-time job experience before tended to smoke more. The higher the average of pocket money was, the more students smoked. The students who experienced indirect smoking at home, felt more stress and depressive mood, and they were willing to suicide, and already tried to suicide more. Conclusion: Adolescents’ smoking was not influenced by just one factor but by various factors such as personal characteristics, family environment and mental health. Therefore we should consider multi-faceted factors of adolescents’ smoking behavior to promote the national wide level policy for preventing and quitting adolescent’s smoking.
